Looking forward to your work Joe.

I go by Jack, but my friends call me Brien.

If I'm having a good day and your not having that good of a song day, I can often pick people up to a level here-to-fore never imagined by the song writer. If I'm having a bad day and the artist is full of themselves...well, thats where the name Shark came from.

Or was it Dog?

Either way, lets have some fun out there, and welcome to AW:)

Should I say this out loud?  I've already posted one "attack" on Mr. Mooney, he's gonna think I don't like him.

It's not that, but I wanted to mention something ...

In the music industry, when a songwriter comes in and says "I write for all genres" the execs laugh when he leaves.  True story.

Think about it.  I bet you are also "versatile" right?  Don't use that word either.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Nope, I don't think you did get it.

Look at the top of this page, your first post and you'll see that you mentioned "write for all genres as you'll witness in the coming weeks"

What I said was, music execs think that is very funny, i.e., a joke, when a songwriter tells them that.

Your not a joke.  But if go droppin' that line on those that count, yes, they will laugh when you leave.  It's an industry inside joke.

You write for all genres?  More power to you.  :)

I'm glad you're exploring many genres; it's a good exercise and can only help in the pursuit of strong songwriting skills, for now.  When and if things really come together for you as a songwriter, I expect the current notion that 'I write for all genres' will be dead, buried and forgotten.

My comment was just a suggestion that you not present yourself to professionals as the songwriter who writes for all genres, and that's all it was.  If you're looking for a star quarterback, do you pick the guy who says he's good at all sports or the guy who says he's a star quarterback?

Just a suggestion.  Nothing earthshaking.  Not even news to many.  I'm finished so kick me out, shut the door and carry on.

And yes, "versatile" can be a very funny word also.

Good luck.

I agree with what you are saying Ativas.

Either way or any variation of being able to mentally craft for all genres is indeed a misnomer.

An individual can write many things using many pieces of the parts that make up a complete song. But to suggest that one can write for all genres does suggest an alarming rate of talent in musical theory and abilities on multiple instruments.

Or maybe it just means that a Masters in English is in order.

Either way, I won't ever say that I can write for multiply genres again!!!I swear!!!

Hey Jack, thanks for the chuckle.  I'm glad to hear you have your 'genre-speak' in order.  I'm thinking now I should have kept my big mouth shut, but at the time, it seemed important.  (Musta bin the whiskey.)  When I hear someone say something like 'I write for all genres' (so bloody common) I immediately know that same person is in the beginning stages of their songwriting 'carear.'  I immediately wonder if there is anything they do well in the songwriting game.  Thing is, it's not just me.  If it were, I would have kept my mouth shut.  Fact is, suggesting to the pro's that you write for all genres will invoke the inevitable response, "NEXT!"

And it ain't nothin' personal.  Just a suggestion.  After all, when push comes to shove, it's best to look and act professional in all respects.
