Who rates the songs?

Other songwriters with a chip on there shoulder perhaps !2 and a half rating for "Mark Of John" is a joke ! do other songwriters rate down material to benefit there own entries perhaps? How sad ! Im gonna post up another few songs and i'll slip in one that the Disney corporation through abc television signed up on a 5 year worldwide sync contract but guess what it will only prob get a 2 rating!I also believe that on a songwriting forum songs should be judged on the actual song not on the technical merits of how well its produced or how the vocals sound if that was the case from the beginning how many great songs would we have missed out on? The merit is in the song ! its up to the final release of the tune to meet the standards expected not the demo. cheers The voice of reason !

You aren't the first person to get upset at less than stellar reviews. You work hard on your music and you're proud of it. But I for one agree with the rating. You may have other tunes that are awesome, but that one ain't. I actually called an A&R friend in NYC for a 2nd opinion 'cause I don't like doing things half-assed. He listened to the song while i was on the line, and he thought I was joking. He skewered the song. Personally, I don't think it's bad, but I also don't think it's above average. So you've got users on the site as well as at least one real live professional saying that this is not a very good song. So now what do you do with that information? Dismiss it as jealousy from a bunch of angry hacks or accept that some improvements could be made and grow further as an artist? This site is a real bitch in that respect.

I'm takin' the plunge.  I've been coming to this site on and off for a year and a half, at least.  Never submitted a song, never poked my head out in the forums.  Don't know why today is different but don't care either.  Maybe I just can't resist getting in on the forum antics around this place.  They seem to be rare, but humorous when they occur.  My first post goes to you Mr. Mooney.

I'm with B.C.  To cut to the chase, it just ain't that good.  I enjoyed the harp, but that's it.  As a commercial submission, it would be treated like a joke.  The biker bar thing is spot on; it would go over well in that environment.

If you really want to be successful in the music industry you're gonna have to learn how to listen to your songs objectively.  It ain't easy, but it's necessary or they'll stop letting you in the door - if you can get it open in the first place.

I wish you luck, but that song ain't gonna do it.

AH-RIGHT - fresh blood! Two here-to-fore unheard froms - maybe we can lure CA back....!!!

I listened and left a comment - the one with the Sex Pistols reference. Which for me is a positive smile.gif.

You said -
songs should be judged on the actual song not on the technical merits of
how well its produced or how the vocals sound.

You will find some people here who are mature, serious, and experienced enough about songwriting to listen to THE SONG and give useful criticism. But you will get a lot of the petty, superficial comments, too. This is just one (or should be just one) of manymanymany places for you to use to get feedback - then weed through it all for what's useful and not.

Keep 'em coming - best of luck ...... !

Search for the artist Donna Sansoucie. Listen to her work and then come back here and tell me how much production is worth. Everything matters. And when all the little pieces add up to average, people pick apart the part of the song they are most comfortable at picking apart.

I can only echo what BC said. This site, in particular, will make you grow or make you go. Many have come and many have gone. The effort it takes to match the /mean average/ acceptable level of sonic tuneage is high.

Not low, as many think.

It's like going in the Blue Bird Cafe or any place where you are effectively auditioning to a crowd that can do what you can do. Not everyone is going to see things your way, some will be positive because that is all they know how to do and some will bitch because that is all they know how to do. But if you are at least as good as everyone else in all areas, your chances increase.

And do not be fooled my brother. All the real talented people are either dead or have no drive to even consider running in a dog and pony show to have their work listened to. Someone else does that for them.

In the end...production does matter.

A really talented artist can get away with a less then good production, like I do;) But a rickity none playing loud ass no spelling redneck better be prepared to have good production because I will need, I mean, that artist will need something to hide the fact that they, as an artist, suck.

We are each one sperm cell trying to make that swim upstream.

wellll, granted Donna had some weird recording things going on that made some of her stuff almost impossible to listen to. But even then, she had a couple of runner up weeks, maybe a winner or two (?).

But the other end of the spectrum is these masterfully produced, beautifully sung and played songs that are just crappy ill-conceived songs. One I remember - female vocalist country style band, the song was something like The Girls are Going Fishing (or Been Fishing, whatever). And it starts out with a great beat, great music and vocals, and then the longer it plays, the more pointless and incomprehensible it gets. So I wouldn't listen to that again any more than I would listen to Donna's more mechanically challenged ones. And remember John Thibodeax? Great singer, great production, mediocre songs at best. Again, nothing of interest to go back and listen to.

Agreed, some useful feedback comes passing through via AW sometimes, but sometimes not, and that's why it takes many sources of critiques and comments to get a solid perspective on what you're doing wrong and right.

Hey - I'm just trying to get some of the 40+ site visitors to say SOMETHING........!
