It's ok, my son: I'm a blues fan. Country is alright, too. Except that Garth guy. He's Satan, so heads up. Frankly, all the "lord" this, and "savior" that, gets a little boring. I mean, do you really think I'm so insecure that I need to constantly be reminded of my greatness? They're still talking about how I totally saved that wedding reception in Canaan like 2000 years ago. Who has a wedding and only gives their guests water? I Jesused-up that party but good. Ah, good times. Really, for Dad's sake, just like whatever music you like. As long as you're not being a jerk, and kicking puppies and stealing stuff, I couldn't care less what music you like. ~J.C.
I think your more immediate concern should be your spelling. How devout can you be when you misspell "Christian"?
I'm just bustin' yer chops, but seriously, listen to what Jesus said. He hit the nail on the head. Oh, sorry J.C., probably not one of your favorite phrases.
All blasphemous posts aside, I wanted to weigh in here. I wonder why any 'kind of music' is more or less Christian? Unless you mean lyrics as well, it's hard for a tone derived from plucking a string to be inherently evil I would think.
As far as lyrics go, Christians live in the world and have jobs, kids, love, girlfriends, wives, troubles, doubts, hurt, and everything else that human beings have. Why not sing about them? Of course there are probably some things you could do that would make you a sell out - for instance, if the South Park guys approached you to compose a "Jesus and Pals" parody song for their show and you took the job for the money........you might be a sell-out.
Madeline L'Engle was asked one time what makes art "Christian" art as opposed to something that was more mainstream or secular. Her response was that if the art comes from the heart and mind of a Christian, it is inherently Christian in nature, even if the subject of the produced art itself is not blatantly Christian.
As a Christian man, the songs I've written haven't always been songs of worship, or regurgitations of the Scriptures in singable form. They have come from a heart and mind that knows Christ, and I use that knowledge to reflect on what I see happening in the world, my life, the lives of those closest to me, and on certain topics in general. Most of the songs I've written don't mention Jesus specifically, or contain any Christianese whatsoever.
If you feel like a sell-out because you're writing about true-to-life issues in your songs, then you're probably only feeling that way because of a religious mindset -- and not a good one -- that's been implanted in you for a very long time. As Christians, we are free from the actual slavery of sin, but we're also free from the mental slavery that common "religious" beliefs propagandize. Rock and roll is great. Rap, techno, blues, alternative, industrial, punk, emo, even *cringe* country are all viable styles, and your lyrics shouldn't have to be censored by the Gospel Gestaop in order for them to be effective.
The Gospel Gestapo are trying to tighten their stranglehold on enough of our culture already. As long as you're a good person, and writing songs that are true to who you are, religious affiliation (or lack thereof) is a moot point.
Hey bud, You shouldnt feel like a sell out for writing and play the music you enjoy. Music is not a something to be used for one sole purpose, express what ever you want to express and enjoy it. Any and all genres of music are applicaple to any and all topics. There is nothing saying that Gosple is only portayed in one way, or that blues is only protrayed in one way. Just play what you play and do it with all your heart and enjoy and hopefully other will also enjoy it.
