I really appreciate this site! I think that it is a great avenue for writers and musicians to get that much needed feedback!! We only found it recently but have had a great time post our stuff and have found that the feedback is not only useful and usually fair, but inspiring as well. The competition is an important aspect of inspiration and there is plenty here and hopefully more will come!! Let's make this site fun and help it grow!!
Congrats on finding our little corner of the interwebs. You have some nice music.
This is a great example about what I find kinda funny about AW's format: talented people with good music tend to really like the site and the feedback -glowing or critical, while people who post mediocre music just get mad at the comments rather than admit that their music may need some work.
When I first went to work in music, (many moons ago), I found that it was important to develop a tough skin. This was taught to me by the, at the time, by much older players who had been around a while and had learned to listen critically to those who criticized them. They knew what was relevant and had merit and what was just somebody blowin' hard. Poor music doesn't mean poor musician. It usually means inexperienced. And If a person stays at it long enough, they develop. It's a process, like anything it takes time.
We haven't been on this site long, but the first coment we got was on our song "every other now and then". If I remember, this person was not enamoured by our style stating that, and I'm paraphrasing, our lyrics were cliche', our drum track was "footloose" in nature and our guitar licks were 80's stock! We laughed and thought, yup, that's about right! We are in our 40's and our influences comje from the 70's and 80's and I'm sure that all those licks we learned while playing in cover bands at 18 come sneaking in there. It is who we are. Doug writes lyrics that are relevant to him and many times to us. If these are relevant to a listener, then that's right on! If not, then they aren't. The important thing is we believe in what we got! Criticism is important to us, and we do listen to it. I'm sure Rich, our guitar player is trying, as I write, to develop his chops, still, after all his years in music. And I bet you'd be surprised with his lineage and career. But he's still learning and so am I. It's a process. It takes time!
