If you are Brad Roll and you happen to read this message, I just wanted to know how you got that acoustic to sound the way it does in your song Small.(What kind of guitar, did you mic it, or plug directly into the guitar and use the treble, mid and bass controlls)???
Daniel - many apologies on the slow response, I just moved and have not yet re-connected to the internet and must use my computer at work (teaches me great lessons in patience).
Anyway about the song - it's been since early 2005 since I recorded it, but I'll do my best to answer your question.
Firstly, I have a Takamine EAN40-C, which is an acoustic-electric, but for most of my more recent recordings (of which 'Small' is included) were recorded in a more traditional style. We used a condenser mic (for the life of me I can't remember which kind it was) placed about 6-inces away from the soundhole. The guitar has a very rich sound to it and in my opinion, plugging it in does it no real justice.
Then I sang into another condenser mic, which also picked up some of the guitar's louder tones and resonations ('Small' was recorded in a 'live' setting - so admittedly, it is unfinished and very bare-bones).
When I play live, I do plug in, but I hate to becuase I really think some of the tone is lost.
Hope this helps and thanks a bunch for the inquiry. - brad
