Websites

Hey all - just another quick question. I'm in need of a website - like bradroll.com or something like that where I can post music, news, a journal, videos and such. I'm just not sure where to get started. Any help would be appreciated - I'm not really good with the technology thing. Thanks.

Do you have any experience in that area Brad?

Okay, bradroll.com is available, I checked.

You can register it at the site I use for my domains for $6.99 (one year registration) or $15.54 for 2 years, $23.41 for 3 and so on up to 10 years.  This fee does not include the cost of a website host, which is something else you will need.  If you plan to build your website now however, this is not necessarily the best method for getting the domain name.

Others can weigh in on this, but I have found ipowerweb.com to be an amazing website host.  The current fee is $7.99 per month and they give you a really nice array of tools and features for use with your site, not to mention 10,000 MB of disc space and 250 GB bandwith transfer - an amount you won't be able to use for a long time, if ever.  If you register with ipowerweb for their hosting service you get a domain name free.  In other words, when you sign up, you tell them you want bradroll.com and it will be arranged for you.  You will retain control over the domain.  (I am not affiliated with ipowerweb by the way, just a fan.)

If you need help walking through it, just let me know.  If you don't think you will be building your site for a while then you should register the domain name anyway - using the method I mentioned first.  Even domains that are names of people (bradroll.com) can be swallowed up when you least expect it and then you won't be able to get it; you'd have to pick a different one under that scenario.

Hope this helps.

Multimedia files such as music (MP3s, Shockwave), video (QuickTime, MediaPlayer), large portable documents (PDF), or graphic based animation files (Flash) require a good deal of bandwidth for them to run quickly and smoothly.

http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting-plus - $4.95 a month
6000 MB (6 GB) of Disk Space
300 GB Monthly Data Transfer
10 E-mail Accounts
1 MySQL Database
Netfirms Picture Pro Photo Gallery
FrontPage Exts. & PHP

Don - I have pretty much zilch experience, save a clunky geocities website. Thanks much to all for the info - I'm checking on it.

I'm familiar with Netfirms but I gotta tell ya, iPowerWeb has a ton of pre-installed, ready to go apps that even a beginner can fire up. "Click-click"  I've never found anyone that comes close to what they offer.  Then again, it's not like I've seen them all either.  Bottom line, for about $100 you can be ready to go with a site that will serve you well (no pun intended) for a year.  Of course, you'll still have to build the actual site ...

Here's one to consider..   http://hostbaby.com/

$20/mo. might seem a bit expensive, but you wouldn't have to pay someone to build and maintain the site. It's EXTREMELY EASY to do yourself and VERY PROFESSIONAL looking. It's all there; emailer, concert calendar, streaming audio, guestbook, etc.! Besides, most of us waste 65¢ a day (which is what it works out to). Also, the domain name is included in the price. And no, I don't work for them!

good thing you don't work for them...20 dollars a month! Why that's, let's see, carry the 1...that's cutting into my drinking money way too deep.

Yea, that expensive website cost me damn near 15 bucks a YEAR! What crooks those hosting companies are...the nerve of them, 15 dollars while some guitar player goes without strings or a drummer without head. Corporate world...I remember when we were discussing how best to develop this, what you call Internet, what SR.Tim Berners Lee and I referred to then as the world wide web, we wanted to have a globe of information sharing easily accessable to the world...and free porn. I know I got my wish!!! But seriously, don't you think globes are over-rated?

Brad..

..just wondering if you ever got a website. I still don't think $5/wk is all that much, especially for something a dork like me can put together and maintain. Here's Barb's..  http://barbsharples.com/
